Type Locality and Naming

Central-westernmost Hubei. The Taixi Fm was named by the Party of Regional Geological Survey, Hubei Bureau of Geology in 1974. The type section is in Taizishang of Bancang Town at the major peak of Shennongjia Mt., Hubei Province (a compound section). Middle formation (5 of 11 in Lexicon) of Shennongjia Gr.

Lithology and Thickness

In the typical section, it is complex in lithologic character, composed mainly of gray, dark-grey, pebbly quartz sandstone, quartz sandstone, sandy slate, carbonaceous silty slate, basaltic tuffaceous breccia, basic volcanic breccia, tuff and limestone, nodular limestone and dolomitic limestone. Lower part is dominated by classic rocks, but the carbonate rock and volcanic content increases in the Upper part. It is recorded as 703 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base of the formation is in disconformable contact with underlying Kuangshishan Fm

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Temahe Fm.

Regional extent

Central-westernmost Hubei. It is exposed mainly around Jinchon and Tiechang rivers in Shennongjia Forest District and in Dahong mountains, central part of Hubei Province.

The stromatolites in basal part are Conophyton f.
